Where to Stay in Shymkent

The best-rated hotels in the city — and the case for a night in Turkistan.

Shymkent has a good, inexpensive range of hotels, from a five-star palace to modern international mid-range brands and small locally run places. Most visitors need two or three nights.

Which area? Stay as close as you can to the central strip between Ordabasy Square, Independence Park and the Arbat: you can walk to dinner and the evening promenade, and taxis to the station or airport are short. Hotels further out are often newer and quieter but mean a taxi for everything — which, at local fares, is not a great hardship.

The guest scores below are Trip.com’s, out of 5, as we found them at the time of writing. We do not quote prices because they move daily; every card opens the live rate.

Accommodation: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hotel in Shymkent?

For five-star facilities, Rixos Khadisha; for the highest guest ratings among the large hotels at the time of writing, DoubleTree by Hilton. Several smaller local hotels also score very well.

Should I stay overnight in Turkistan?

If you can spare the night, yes. You see the mausoleum without the midday crowds and heat, and you can add Sauran and Otrar the next day with far less driving.

Are there hostels or budget options?

Yes, Shymkent has hostels, guesthouses and many inexpensive small hotels. Standards vary, so rely on recent reviews.

Is it easy to find a hotel near the railway station?

There are a few, but the centre is only about 3 km away and a taxi costs very little, so it is rarely worth choosing a hotel for the station alone.
