The eroded mud-brick walls and towers of the ruined city of Sauran in the steppe

Sauran

Kazakhstan’s best-preserved medieval walls

Sauran (Sawran) is what most people imagine when they think of a lost Silk Road city: a ring of weathered mud-brick walls, still up to six or seven metres high, standing completely alone in the flat steppe with the Karatau hills on the horizon.

The town flourished from the 13th to the 16th centuries. In the 14th century it served for a time as a capital of the White Horde, and later it was a strong fortress of the Uzbek and Kazakh khans. Sixteenth-century travellers praised two things: its "shaking minarets" and its kariz, underground channels that brought water from several kilometres away. When the water system failed, the city emptied. Because nobody built over it, the plan of walls, gates, main street and central square is unusually clear.

Top things to do at Sauran

Enter through the main gate

The north-eastern gate, flanked by two massive towers, has been partly restored. From it a main street leads to the central square, where the foundations of a mosque and a madrasa have been excavated.

Walk a section of the walls

A path follows the ramparts. Stay on marked routes — the mud-brick is fragile and climbing on it speeds its destruction.

Stay for sunset

In the last hour of daylight the walls turn deep gold and the steppe goes silent. It is one of the best photographs in Kazakhstan.

How to get to Sauran

  • From Turkistan: about 45 km north-west along the main highway towards Kyzylorda, then a short side road; allow 40–50 minutes.
  • From Shymkent: roughly 215 km, close to three hours each way, so Sauran is best added to an overnight in Turkistan.
  • On a tour: two tours starting in Turkistan combine Sauran with Otrar and Arystan Bab.

Insider tips

  • There is no shade, water or shop at the site. Bring everything you need.
  • After rain the access track and the clay underfoot become slippery.
  • Mid-summer midday visits are punishing; aim for early morning or the last two hours of light.
